VSSA Community PTO MEETING REVIEW

PTO Introductions, Mission, Support
Ways to support the PTO: Pay your dues, join the Booster Club, and volunteer

Treasury Update
Dues participation is at 70%. 80 students have not paid. We have had some generous donations. Participation is up from last year but still short of our goal.

Community Events Update
Treats for new parent orientation, back to school night, parent social, teacher/staff//coaches social, 5th/6th grade social gathering, VSSA Booster event, coffee with Mr Hill 4x per year.

School Update

Debrief of the safety scares
Swatting events-threats were made to 4-5 schools. The threats were taken very seriously by the school district and local police.
Communication with the parents and community-what is too much and what isn’t enough?

Wilderness Trip
Huge success. Split the students into three different groups: high school, 7th/8th and 5th/6th. A few examples horseback riding, hut trips, rafting, duckies, camping at the National Monument

New Staff
Katie Geraci-Middle School STEM/WIN groups
Kari Bangtson-Vice Principal
Justin Gregg-6th/7th Social Studies

WIN Time
What I Need, 5th, 6th and 7th. Assessed through testing at the beginning of the school year. Small groups meet 3 days/week for intervention and 2 days of adventure (something fun). Will retest on November 2nd to see their progress.

Cell Phone Policy
Teachers have said this is working well though and are appreciative. A generous donor paid for the cell phone lockers. Unfortunately the students are not using the lockers. Would love to have the students lock up their phones or leave them at home.5th and 6th grades are fabulous, 7th and 8th have some repeat offenders, and high schoolers continue to be the main problem.

Principal Search
Superintendent Qualman will post the job in November and leave it open until February. Will be a national search. HR with the district will do a series of focus groups, meet with VSSA staff, 1-2 parent groups, parent/teachers/students interview groups. Hoping to fill the position by February or March.

Enrollment Update
278 students: 5th-26, 6th-34, 7th-38, 8th-41, 9th-24, 10th-41, 11th-49, and 12th-25
144 expressed interest in VSSA, only 89 full applications. Lost some athletes over the summer.
Declining enrollment within the district. Roughly 144 students less this year across ECSD.

Looking forward
Spirit week this week
October Break next week
Halloween Day-PSAT and Halloween Costume Contest
Snowball Dance, Friday 11/1-An Evening in Paris. A lot of volunteer opportunities available
Winter Schedule begins on 11/5

VSSA is looking for lunchtime and recess volunteers.

Academic Coaches
6 coaches this year, 2 are half-time.
John Foss, Emily Martino, Kristen Letko, RJ Meyer, Ryan Higgins, David Livinsky, and Bob Zuck-volunteer
VSSA wanted to establish a slush fund collected from the AC fees for scholarships. VSSA is down 20 kids this year, resulting in a loss of a projected $20,000 in academic coach fees.
